In our experience working with rooftops and solar installations, one thing has become clear: how you mount solar panels matters just as much as the panels themselves. While there are different ways to install panels on slate roofs, we’ve found that using purpose-built stainless steel or aluminium brackets (like the ones from Renusol or Esdec) often results in a cleaner, more durable job compared to methods that involve drilling directly through the slates – such as solar limpets.
Of course, everyone has their own approach, and what works for one installer may not suit another. But here’s why we do things the way we do — and why we believe it’s worth doing it right the first time, even if it costs a bit more upfront.
It’s About Workmanship and Respecting the Roof
When we install on slate, we aim to preserve the integrity of the roof as much as possible. We personally prefer systems like:
These products are designed to sit above the slate tiles, anchoring securely without (in our understanding) having to drill directly through each tile. From our point of view, this means less disruption to the existing roof structure — which we consider a win for both longevity and aesthetics.
Again, that’s just how we see it. Some installers may be confident drilling through slates and might even prefer that route. But for us, that level of intrusion feels riskier, and not something we’d recommend unless absolutely necessary.
Our Opinion: Quality Over Shortcuts
We know that high-quality brackets can be more expensive. There’s more labour involved, more attention to detail, and often more time on site. But in our view, it’s worth it. Here’s why:
